Our Climate Programme is looking for a Brussels-based Corporate and Finance Lawyer to join their team. This is a great opportunity for a lawyer with a strong corporate, banking or financial services background to make a key contribution to the work of our climate finance team, which sits within ClientEarth's Climate Programme. The Climate Programme uses corporate and financial laws to drive greater integration of climate-related financial risks into the management decisions of companies and influential actors in the financial sector.

Our objective is to encourage a shift towards a cleaner, more sustainable, and resilient economic system that is well prepared for the risks of climate change fully integrates environmental externalities and does not simply pass costs on to future generations.

Main Duties

In this role you will be using your expertise to support the work of the team as it continues to develop and implement policy and advocacy strategies and targeted legal interventions to support the aims of the Climate Programme in the UK and EU (and beyond) on sustainable finance issues. You will be involved in:

  • Conducting research and preparing internal briefings on a wide range of corporate and financial laws in the UK and EU;
  • Working with lawyers across ClientEarth Programmes, and with external partners or collaborators to identify opportunities, develop and implement strategies for targeted legal intervention, litigation or regulatory complaints;
  • Preparing high-quality written work - for example, legal letters or briefings, regulatory complaints;
  • Participating in formal and informal fora and groups, and representing ClientEarth's thinking and analysis.

Role requirements

  • Law degree or equivalent;
  • Relevant legal professional qualification with a qualification in the UK or a EU Member State;
  • Experience in private practice or a relevant in-house role with a focus on corporate, banking or financial sector actors in the EU;
  • A strong interest and understanding of climate-related issues;
  • Knowledge of UK and EU legal framework and professional codes governing financial industry actors;
  • Fluency (CEFR Level C2) in English.

Further Information

This position will be based in Brussels and will involve occasional travel. Other ClientEarth European locations are potentially available.
