Head of Legal & Compliance, Corporate Functions

You will continuously look to identify ways to provide agile and pragmatic legal services, defining where possible structural improvement opportunities (processes, procedures or tools) on how we serve our clients. The role is also responsible for the effective use of existing central legal technology tools including entity management software (Global Entity Management System (GEMS)) and board meeting software (BoardVantage), and for identifying and deploying (i) ways to maximize the effectiveness of these tools and (ii) new legal technology solutions. You will also have an opportunity to play an active role in one or more global working groups driving the continued alignment and where relevant integration of our legal function globally, as we look to identify and share best practices across the globe on how to serve these functions.

As a direct report to the BSEMEA General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer and be part of the core EMIA Legal Leadership Team. You will be the primary business partner of C-level senior leaders including COO, Vice Presidents of key functions, and directors throughout the organization.

You will be based in our HQ in Zaventem, Belgium, but could also be based elsewhere, near a Bridgestone location with periodic travel to HQ and other Bridgestone locations as relevant. Our smart working policy entitles you to working from home up to three days per week when not traveling on company business.

What we expect you to do and be able to:

  • Handle, as well as coordinate your team’s handling of, a wide variety of legal and compliancde matters, including, but not limited to joint development agreements, strategic alliances, licenses, purchase agreements, service and consultancy agreements, and non-disclosure agreements;
  • Identify and resolve legal issues quickly and effectively, make on the spot risk calls and have an execution focus;
  • Create and maintain strong relationships with business leadership that allow for legal and compliance support to be tailored to the present and emerging needs of the strategic functions;
  • Design and implement policies and procedures to more effectively provide legal services to the business and/or address compliance-related concerns or needs;
  • Use authority (both actual and perceived) to effectively influence business partners and legal department teammates to achieve business goals.

What qualifications we request:

  • JD or Masters of Law degree (or equivalent) from a reputable university;
  • No less than 10 years of relevant legal experience, of which preferably no less than three years in a reputable law firm and at least a couple of years of relevant in-house legal experience;
  • Demonstrated outside counsel management skills to ensure we obtain great value for an acceptable cost;
  • Prior experience managing a team, demonstrated leadership skills, and the drive to build relationships and internal support;
  • Collaborative, enthusiastic and strong team player with excellent written and oral communication skills in English. Fluency in speech and writing of at least one other major European language is a big plus;
  • Ability to work effectively with teammates at all levels of the organization;
  • Good commercial awareness and a pragmatic, solutions-oriented, point of view;
  • Strong values in line with Bridgestone’s behavioral expectations (= Ownership, Agility and Courage);
  • High level of business and personal ethics.
