The Role

Our present IP PSL is transitioning to a client engagement and new business role, opening up an exciting opportunity for a top-notch IP lawyer to join the IP Group as its Professional Support Lawyer. Working alongside the Head Contentious PSL, the Head of IP, and other PSLs supporting the work of the Innovation Department and our wider contentious practices, the PSL will provide professional support to lawyers in the IP Group. The role will focus on developing and implementing knowledge, thought leadership and technology initiatives as part of our business development and knowledge strategy. As legal services continue to transform, key elements of the role will involve commercialising knowledge for the purposes of business generation, as well as harnessing technology to transform our delivery of services to our clients.

The role will include the following:

Thought leadership and leveraging knowledge

  • Lead on innovative ways of using knowledge and technology to develop business opportunities, add value to key client relationships, and to bring efficiencies to client service;
  • Work with Practice Group and Knowledge/BD/Practice Transformation leads to drive the knowledge and practice transformation agendas outlined in our business plans;
  • Monitor our key clients (and their sectors) to ensure we have up to date knowledge of key issues facing these clients and preparing tailored content;
  • Drive engagement with clients, and key contacts, through a range of knowledge-based initiatives which can develop, engage and promote client relationships;
  • Help deliver a communication strategy, including content creation and review for client alerts, website content, and articles in Mishcon and external publications (including the legal, trade and general press);
  • Manage process of directory and award submissions, alongside Practice Group Leads and Business Development.

Training

  • Alongside our highly regarded Academy, deliver and co-ordinate training on legal developments, and on emerging legal, regulatory and sectoral issues, through a variety of communication channels;
  • Work closely with our Practice Transformation team to drive the development and delivery of practice transformation-related lawyer training.

Development of precedents, research and know how

  • Collect, draft, maintain and update the team's suite of precedents, worked examples, and know how, including automated document assembly;
  • Monitor legal, regulatory and sectoral developments across the wide range of areas covered by the team and provide horizon scanning updates to both our clients and our lawyers;
  • Manage, and drive engagement with, the teams' pages on the Firm's Intranet and other knowledge repositories;
  • Provide assistance with high level research tasks (both fee-earning and business development related);
  • Maintain expert and Counsel directories.

Risk management

  • Work with our General Counsel team, Risk & Compliance, and Partners to implement and embed best practices (Mq2) and other R&C requirements across the Group.

General PSL activities

  • Create strong links with the specialist teams within the Academy, Knowledge Services, Tech, Risk and Compliance, Practice Transformation, Strategy, and Business Development;
  • Encourage a knowledge-sharing culture and facilitate fee-earners in contributing to the Firm's know-how through a range of initiatives.

Skills/Attributes

  • At least 4 years PQE broad experience in IP law from a reputable practice or in-house environment. The role may suit a candidate who is currently fee-earning/in-house and is looking to move into a PSL role;
  • The candidate will have specialist knowledge and experience of IP covering all IP rights, with an emphasis on IP protection and enforcement (litigation). In addition to strong IP experience, the candidate will demonstrate a keen interest in relevant sectors (notably life sciences, entertainment, telecoms, luxury, fashion and betting and gaming) and related areas. This includes general contentious work, marketing & advertising, brand extension and management, and technology;
  • Ability to drive the PSL agenda and departmental priorities;
  • Demonstrable experience of providing thought leadership and practice transformation initiatives;
  • People leadership skills and experience;
  • Excellent written and commercial drafting skills;
  • Ability to effectively manage own workload, work independently and as part of a team;
  • Strong organisational, prioritising and interpersonal skills;
  • Resilient and calm under pressure with an adaptable and flexible approach;
  • Agile and forward thinking.
