Meta is seeking a legally qualified senior EU privacy manager to join the European Office of the Data Protection Officer (ODPO). The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge of European data protection laws, regulations, and best practices, with a proven track record of providing strategic guidance and legal expertise to ensure compliance with EU privacy regulations. The candidate will advise Meta on a range of privacy and data protection legal and compliance initiatives.

The role is broad and, among other things, involves managing the ODPO’s team of legally qualified advisors as well as being the senior advisor to the DPO on a wide variety of strategically critical legal requirements and developments. This position requires the ability to lead the assessment of the impact of business initiatives on data subject's privacy and data protection, as well as the impact of laws and regulations on Meta products and services. We are looking for a consummate manager with sharp analytical skills who is a strong presenter and communicator, who inspires and motivates through their passion for the subject matter. The role requires a diligent, proactive, collaborative and organised individual with a strong track record in advising at the intersection between compliance and innovation and understands the capabilities required to deliver excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Manage, coach and provide guidance to a team of legally qualified privacy professionals within the ODPO
  • Identify and build capabilities to ensure the ODPO remains at the forefront of European regulatory and statutory matters that may impact Meta and its users
  • Leads on innovative methods to deliver quality advice at the highest level
  • Lead and direct thought leadership on all aspects of European privacy
  • Act as the senior ODPO lead in evaluating the impact of legislative, regulatory, legal developments and industry proposals related to the GDPR across Meta’s services and companies, as well as the impact of Meta services and products on data subjects' rights relating to privacy and data protection
  • Lead the development and issuance of advice concerning risk and compliance with the GDPR through mechanisms such as DPIAs, briefings and formal advice notes
  • Lead the partnership with Meta’s legal functions to ensure effective and consistent collaboration as a business partner
  • Support the DPO in advocating for a culture of compliance and ethics throughout Meta so that privacy is considered from the outset

Minimum Qualifications

  • 10+ years of post-qualification experience
  • Deep understanding of European data protection laws and related regulations, including GDPR, ePrivacy Directive, DSA, DMA and proposed EU AI Act and other relevant directives and frameworks
  • Strong awareness of the challenges and complexities associated with modern technologies, innovation and privacy
  • Experience of management responsibilities, leading teams of legal professionals and building capabilities in-keeping with the pace of change in complex privacy and technology environments
  • Ability to independently, quickly and accurately assess legal, practical and business risks in a fast-paced environment and make sound judgments
  • Experience working collaboratively with cross-functional teams to get the job done
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and an absolute commitment to professionalism and collegiality
  • Able to inspire others to develop, communicate and execute with clarity, in particular when translating complex technical issues into business language

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in managing the deployment of new legal/regulatory obligations into complex businesses, preferably in consumer facing organisations
  • Experience with data management, information governance, networks, AI/ML development and AR/VR technology
  • Experience with other global privacy laws, regulations, and industry guidelines, especially those relevant for social media and Internet companies
  • Tenure in a large technology companies
  • Commercially aware practitioner, capable of applying regulatory principles and frameworks to complex business and operational arrangements
  • Experience and an understanding of wider regulatory pressures (such as DMA, DSA) would be beneficial, with IAPP certification as a data protection professional (CIPP/E, CIPP/M, CIPP/T) preferable
